The Daily Drama Unfolds, and We Are Still Putting Up With It

We're going to sit back and watch a drama unfold to distract us while the Trump administration steals us blind to give billionaires a tax cut, dismantling vital government programs and services which are the obligation of government to provide, which human morality and collective American values say are not for sale to the highest bidder, and are not the kind of human need off of which someone should profit.  Along with those things, our personal freedom is also being stolen away, our constitution, and with it the rights that it bestows on we, the people and the limits it imposes on government.

If this President has the kind of power to do the things that the news media reports he is planning to do, or threatening to do, then we, the people, have permitted a Presidency to go way beyond the powers that the founding fathers ever intended the chief executive of the United States government ever to have.  We have failed our basic Civics education course, we have an electorate that is increasingly unaware of the way this particular constitutional democracy works, and has accepted the lies and deceit that are the result of a partisan spirit that has divided this country in preparation for its conquest.

We have seen an incredible display of some of the most incredible ignorance and deception that has ever occurred in the history of this country.  We are watching the dismantling of democratic government right before our eyes, with some of the most incompetent, unqualified, demented and psychologically disabled individuals in charge of our homeland security, our military, our treasury department, and the health and welfare of American citizens.

And as the realization has now grown to the point, among we, the people, that we are seeing a political disaster unfold, and that we must put a stop to it before much more time passes, we are now watching two egomaniacs have a personal falling out that is helping to attract attention away from the major economic disaster that is right around the corner, if not here already.  I mean, we can't trust the figures this government puts out, because it is not an honest government.

Now, one of the billionaires who helped Trump buy the election is at odds with the demagogue he helped elect, and they are slinging embarassing and, frankly, damaging barbs at each other in a feud that makes me suspect they are doing this to take the attention off the disastrous terms of the current "big ugly bill" that is in the Senate right now.  Whether it's actually a real fight, or something out of the playbook of professional wrestling, and they will kiss and make up at the end, it's certainly an example of what a President of the United States should never, ever do.

Haven't we had enough?

Is The Means Even Available to Fix the Problem?

I'm not sure that it is.

Our legal system is complicated, and pervasively corrupt.  It is so tilted to benefit the rich and powerful, that it is rendered ineffective in actually providing justice.  Justice implies that fairness has been applied, but how fair is a system in which a former President can use money given to his campaign fund to pay for lawyers who will file motions that delay the procedings?  The rest of us are stuck with the calendar the court determines.  Or how fair is a system in which judges appointed by that same former President feel they owe him a favor for getting their job and pay him back by making rulings in his favor without even worrying about or considering how bad the publicity will be for them and how corrupt they will look?  They're appointed for life, and for all intents and purposes, are virtually unaccountable.  They can be as corrupt as they want and get away with it.

There were those of us who, when Biden was elected with a small Democratic majority in both Houses, we not only celebrated, but we advocated for using the power we had to do things that would eliminate the possibility of Trump ever being a threat to American democracy again.  We saw what he was capable of doing, on January 6.  But the Justice Department, fearing that its actions might look "too political," wouldn't take the risks to expidite Trump's criminal prosecutions.  In a word, this was a monumental failure.

We had four years, and for two years of that period of time, had control of both houses of Congress.  But what Democrats lacked was the boldness to take some necessary political risks to change the makeup of the Supreme Court, knowing that they wouldn't die off fast enough, or be impeached and removed.  The possibility of packing that damn court was within our grasp, had our leadership possessed the boldness and had they been willing to take the risks.  There are plenty of ways that the impact of those risks could have been minimized, or eliminated.

But the Democratic party leadership failed to do all they could have done to eliminate the threat. It's not really that they couldn't do it, it is that they did not possess the collective will to get it done, and so the efforts that were made failed.

We have, serving as our President, a man who defied and disrespected the constitution and the people who empower it.  A man who is not only a political criminal, in multiple violations of the rule of the law, including inciting an insurrection and stealing and selling classified documents, but who is also a morally bankrupt rapist and sexual pervert.  He is a colossal embarassment and the single, prime example of the monumental failure of the entire American justice system.

A justice system that lets a man get away with everything and then wind up in the White House, rather than being prosecuted and sentenced to prison for his crimes is pitiful, worthless and corrupt, and it is clear that the politicians in this country, including many, if not most, Democrats, are not willing to do a damn thing about it.

But Are Democrats Doing All They Can Do?

I need some things explained to me.  How is it possible, under our Constitution, for someone to get away with the crimes that Trump has gotten away with, cheat the system, and get elected President instead of serving years in prison?  And if a criminal like Trump, who publicly flaunts the law, isn't in prison, then who is our justice system imprisoning?  I'd like to see some research on where the income line has been drawn to separate those who must go to prison to pay their debt to society for their crimes, and those like Trump, who buy their way out of justice.  And what that fact says about the United States is not good.

Even with the checks on Presidential power provided by the Supreme Court and Congress completely gone I can't be convinced that in a country where the justice system is almost built completely on legal delaying tactics for the rich, there is not one thing a Democrat in Congress or the Senate can do to stop this ridiculous idiocy from continuing.  The Republicans have done quite a bit in throwing wrenches into the Democratic party's plans when the latter is the majority party.  So where are the wrenches now?

Who steps up when a President of the United States flaunts the law, refusing to follow court orders, which is a crime, and enforces the law?  And if we are a democracy, operating under a constitutional republic, then what does it say about the ignorance and stupidity of we, the people, who are allowing this to go on in our name.  What recourse do we have?

It takes an educated and informed electorate to preserve a democracy.  We are losing ours to greed, corruption, lies and ignorance.
