"Yesterday, the President of the United States abandoned a brave ally, and embraced a warmongering thug." Harry Litman, Talking Feds Substack
For the first time in American history, a sitting President of the United States abandoned a fellow democratic world leader of a developing democracy at war with an avowed enemy of the United States. Delivering a litany of distortions, outright lies, and an especially false narrative invoking the name of former President Biden, Trump loudly proclaimed to the world that the ideals of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and all of America's founding fathers are no longer honored or practiced by his Presidency.
Never before has the United States abandoned a country in which there were people who were committed to building a constitutional democracy, and bringing the kind of freedom we enjoy as Americans to a group of people whose history has never provided a place for them to experience this kind of freedom. But our current President only sees the world, and measures it, in terms of monetary value. Idealism is well beyond his grasp, unless it can be turned into something off of which to make a profit, and he's not above stealing even that from the American people for his own personal benefit.
The world watched that press conference today, which showed the President and Vice President of the United States cannot be trusted to tell the truth, are not honest men, and one is a weak sycophant, while the other is an insane egomaniac. They showed that the United States does not have competent leadership, a position that makes us extremely vulnerable to our enemies. Their blatant misrepresentation of the United States, especially the lies they told, borders on treason. The false narrative they spouted puts the United States and its diplomatic corp around the world, those that Musk hasn't fired yet, in grave danger.
Ukrainian President Vlodomir Zelenskyy is a man of honor and truth, and the contrast between his character, and Trump's complete lack of anything resembling character, was startling. The world saw that today. They have had help, of course, but they have chosen to defend their sovereignty, democratic values and reform and the freedom that has brought to them for the first time in their national history. The fact that Trump stands against those things places him in diametric opposition to those same American values. He is clearly no patriot, he is an insane, and cognitively disabled, demagogue.
The United States has not always chosen the best leaders to support in countries where there has been a struggle for national sovereignty and freedom. We've made some whoppers of mistakes. We supported a cruel dictatorship in Cuba that has resulted in that country turning to communist dictatorship which they saw as a better option than what the Americans had to offer. Nicaraguan history is littered with a lot of death and destruction as a result of American interference in their country's politics, to prevent it from falling to a communist regime, which it eventually did anyway. Our involvement with dictators in both Korea and Vietnam did not look good.
Ukraine's democratic government did not get off to a great start. It's in far Eastern Europe, embedded in a world where political corruption is a daily norm and where economic inequity feeds it. Trump's first Presidency was not much help, attempting to bribe the country's leadership into lying for his own personal, political gain. It got him impeached, by the way, legitimately and he should have been convicted and jailed for his crimes. Why he wasn't is an indictment of the Republican party and their complete corruption.
Zelenskyy's leadership has been a key factor in strengthening the Ukrainian government, ousting the corruption and fending off a Russian invasion. The fact that Ukraine maintains the will to fight has a lot to do with his leadership. The stress must be unimaginable. What restraint the man had, to sit there, listen to that demented babbling and not get physically violent. In so doing, Zelenskyy won a huge victory today, not just over Trump's incompetent idiocy, but for his country and for his own integrity and strength. The world saw a real leader, right up next to two phonies. Ukraine will come out of this well.
On the other hand, let's be realistic here. The United States is in major trouble. We have a man who has his finger on one of the world's biggest nuclear triggers who is suffering from dementia, who is exhibiting a high level of cognitive decline, who cannot control his rage and his emotions, and who does not have a realistic grasp on any aspect of world politics. His view of events in Ukraine was distorted to fit his own narrative because he wanted a scandal to try and blacken Biden, and he never counted on the truth coming out. He flew into a rage when it did. And what it does is make us vulnerable to our enemies, because they know that we do not have a President who is capable of acting rationally, and who can be manipulated this way. And there's nothing we can, or will, do about it.
Looking at Moscow's reaction to this, and their claim that Trump did exactly what they wanted him to do. Dmitry Medvedev might as well have directly congratulated Trump for doing their dirty work for them when he said, "the insolent pig finally got a proper slap down in the oval office." He might has well have said, "Thank you, Donald for doing exactly what we wanted you to do."
It also makes us vulnerable to the domestic enemies of American idealism that exist within this country. When the country is undermined from within, the danger is everywhere. No one ever envisioned that the people of the United States would elect a man to the Presidency who was not only morally bankrupt, but who was corrupt, selfish, greedy, mentally ill, incapable of acting in a humane manner and who had no respect for anyone or anything other than money. And no one ever envisioned that the safeguards they thought they built into the system to stop this kind of thing from happening would ever be corrupted to the point where they wouldn't work.
We have a President who is not mentally or intellectually capable of carrying out the responsibility of protecting and defending the Constitution of the United States. He doesn't know the Constitution of the United States, and even if he did, it wouldn't matter if it didn't serve his own interests. And neither do his supporters.
We're in trouble.
